Each year Oakland celebrates its 1850 charter by hosting a wonderful festival. Highlights of the afternoon include: walking tours, picnic lunches, music and story-telling and a unique perspective on Atlanta's history. The Irish have special cause to participate in the festivities. In 1873, the City of Atlanta deeded a plot in Oakland to the Hibernian Benevolent Society. The gift recognized the contribution made by the "Hibernian Rifles" and Father Thomas O'Reilly in defending and preserving the City of Atlanta during the Civil War. Help us continue the tradition of paying homage to our past by attending the ceremony and enjoying Irish piping and dancing.
